Beautiful plant, lush and healthy foliage. Now, I'm waiting to see if it's the right variety, which is always a risk when buying a non-flowering plant.

Description

Originally from northwest Turkey to the Caucasus and northeast Greece, Slaty Blue Oriental Hellebore is a perennial plant with a very dark slate blue flowers veined with plum that will brighten up the shaded areas of your garden in winter. It is a hardy plant that can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F). It has palmate, slightly toothed, dark green and shiny evergreen basal leaves, 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) long, composed of 7 to 9 leaflets.

Oriental Hellebore reaches a height of 40 cm (16in) and spreads out over 30 cm (12in) when mature. From January to March, a bouquet of single, cup-shaped, nodding flowers forms, measuring 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter. Hellebore is a bushy plant that does not like to be moved once established, as the young plants take some time to flower.

This toxic plant should be handled with caution. It is suitable as a cut flower and in borders, edging or even containers. Over time, Hellebore flowers do not wilt like the majority of other flowers, but dry up.

Each seed-sown Hellebore has a unique flower colour: thus slight variations in colour may exist between two plants, which is normal and inevitable. However, if the difference is too significant and alters the desired effect, we will refund or replace the affected plant.

Planting and care

Helleborus Orientalis grows in most soils that are rich and neutral in partial or light shade, sheltered from the wind. Plant from early autumn to spring to bloom from January to March. It thrives in deeply worked soil mixed with organic matter. To feed, use bone meal or another organic fertilizer. In acidic soil, add a little lime. Water well after planting and add a layer of mulch 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) thick. Regularly remove faded leaves. Cut most of the leaves to showcase the flowers. Be careful not to plant the plants too close together to promote their development. Hellebore does not like stagnant water as it may cause it to rot.
