Description

Originally from northwest Turkey to the Caucasus, northeast Greece, the Red Oriental Hellebore is a perennial plant with a mix of red and old pink which will brighten up the shaded areas of your garden in winter. It is a hardy plant that can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F). It has palmate, slightly toothed, dark green and shiny evergreen, basal leaves, 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) long, composed of 7 to 9 leaflets.

Oriental Hellebore reaches a height of 40 cm (16in) and spreads over 30 cm (12in) at maturity. From January to March, a bouquet of single, cup-shaped and slightly inclined flowers forms, measuring 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter. The Hellebore is a bushy plant and does not like to be moved once established, as the young shoots take some time to bloom.

This toxic plant should be handled with caution. It is suitable as cut flowers and in beds, borders or containers. Over time, the Hellebore flowers do not fade like the majority of other flowers but dry up.

Each seed-sown Hellebore has a unique flower colour: slight variations in colour may exist between two plants, this is normal and inevitable. However, if the difference is too significant and distorts the desired effect, we will refund or replace the affected plant.

Planting and care

Helleborus Orientalis grows in most soils that are rich and neutral in partial or light shade, sheltered from wind. Plant from early autumn to spring to bloom from January to March. It thrives in deeply worked soil mixed with some organic matter. For feed, use bone meal or another organic fertilizer. In acidic soil, add a little lime. Water the plants well then add a layer of mulch 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) thick. Regularly remove faded leaves. Cut most of the leaves to highlight the flowers. Be careful not to plant too close together, to promote their development. Hellebore does not like stagnant water as it may cause it to rot.
