Description

Hydrangea macrophylla Caipirinha 'H212907' is a recent Dutch creation, ideal for personalising your decor, both in the garden and indoors, where it proves to be particularly durable. This modest-sized hydrangea with sturdy stems bears globular inflorescences adorned with florets that evolve from green to white-cream, gradually variegated with lime green, each flower showing a red border at the end of flowering. The abundant and regular flowering occurs on beautiful dark green, deeply toothed foliage. This highly innovative hydrangea fits equally well in small gardens as on a terrace with a contemporary decor, to brighten up a shaded area, in cool, non-calcareous soil.

Hydrangea macrophylla Caipirinha is a chic hydrangea, selected for outdoor cultivation, but also for indoor use. It is derived from Hydrangea macrophylla, a deciduous shrub of the Hydrangeaceae family, native to China and Japan.

Caipirinha was awarded at the Hortensia Indoor Show in Berlin in 2017. It is part of a series of Dutch cultivars selected for their sturdy stems, floribundity, and ability to be grown both in open ground and indoors. This shrub has a compact, rounded, regular, and elegant habit. It reaches a mature height of approximately 1.2m (4ft) in all directions, with moderate growth. From June to September-October, its small sterile flowers form medium-sized (10 to 12cm (4 to 5in)) ball-shaped inflorescences, whose changing colour is a combination of white and green. The flowering extends over a satin dark green foliage, which falls in autumn. The leaves are opposite, reaching a minimum length of about 10cm (4in). They are simple, ovate, with a pointed tip, and coarsely toothed like a saw. Hydrangeas can live for at least 50 years.

Caipirinha is a plant with a subtle but assertive personality. It is a shrub full of freshness and excellent endurance to be showcased in the garden, on a terrace, or in the house. Hydrangeas are well known for brightening the north side of houses. This one will thrive in a non-burning east or west exposure, in full sun or partial shade, in flower beds as well as in isolation. This variety is particularly suitable for container cultivation: it can be placed in a beautiful pot on a terrace or near an entrance. Although these plants dislike lime, they are not strictly acid-loving plants. Pair them with Magellan fuchsias or annual impatiens, or plant spring-flowering bulbs in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their magnificent flowering for a long time in the garden or in the house.

Planting and care

Plant in spring or early autumn, preferably in a slightly shaded position, for example against an east-facing wall, or even north-facing. Ideally, place it sheltered from cold, drying winds. It does not require acidic soil, but appreciates deep, non-calcareous, moist but well-drained, fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good base fertiliser before planting. If planting near a wall and the soil is dry at its base, place the root ball at least 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in) away from it and incorporate a quantity of well-decomposed compost to better retain moisture in the soil. Very hardy, it can be planted in cold regions without fear.

As for pruning, remove the faded flowers on the first bud or on the pair of buds directly below. When the plant is mature, prune the older stems back to the base by a quarter or a third. This will encourage the formation of young shoots. Carry out this pruning every year during March and April.
