Very small plant and some leaves are scorched at the tip: frost? Drought? Disappointing.

Description

Hydrangea macrophylla Dolce Gipsy® 'Dolgip' is a fairly recent French creation of rare elegance. It blooms abundantly in June-July, and has the potential to bloom again in September. The delicate colour of its flowers illuminates the garden.

Hydrangea macrophylla Dolce Gipsy® 'Dolgip' is an adorable bush with a well-branched rounded habit. The flowers are grouped in inflorescences called "lace-cap", which means a crown of large sterile flowers surrounds smaller fertile flowers. Here, the sterile flowers in pastel pink offer a soft contrast with the more intense pink of the cluster of fertile flowers.

Macrophylla hydrangeas remain essential bushes for flowering a shady area. Grow them in pots or in flower beds, and enjoy their fresh and dried bouquet-like flowering.

Planting and care

Plant in a shady or semi-shady location. This type of bush does not tolerate chalky soils, so enrich the planting hole with ericaceous soil. Also add some draining material and sand to the planting hole to lighten the soil.  It will appreciate a 5cm (2in) layer of mulch on the soil to keep it cool at its base during summer. Prune in late winter by removing dead wood. Remove old stems that have turned slightly grey, which will rejuvenate the plant. Cut these branches above a large bud. Cut the first flowers to encourage a later bloom.
