Description

This Bolivian Begonia 'Summerwings Apricot', like all its siblings in the Summerwings series, is a vigorous and highly floriferous variety, with an initially upright habit that later becomes pendulous, absolutely perfect for ornamenting planters and hanging baskets. It quickly forms a dense cascade adorned with elongated leaves of a fairly light green colour, on which countless delicately coloured flowers of tender salmon-pink-orange bloom, in simple and elongated corollas. Low-maintenance and undemanding, it blooms for a very long period in both sun and shade. Pair it with Sunpatiens Impatiens and 'Hot' lobelias, which also tolerate sun exposure.

The 'Summerwings Apricot' Begonia is an herbaceous annual plant with a tuberous stump belonging to the Begoniaceae family. This variety is part of a series of recent hybrids selected for their rapid growth, floriferousness, ramified and pendulous habit, as well as for their great resistance and ease of cultivation. 'Summerwings Apricot' will quickly reach a height of 30 cm (11.8 in) and a diameter of 50 cm (19.7 in), and can cascade up to 60-70 cm. Appearing in June and lasting until the first frost, its flowers are simple, elongated, composed of wing-shaped petals in a very soft pink-orange colour. They are gathered in clusters and bloom among elegant elongated, shiny, and dentate-edged leaves. The plant tolerates partial shade and sun, as well as rainy and cool summers, as well as heatwaves, which do not prevent it from flowering.

The Summerwings Begonia is ideal for full sun, but it can also be placed in partial shade. It can be used in pots, balconies, or hanging baskets. The Summerwings Begonias pair well with variegated small Carex (Carex Everlite), the Diamond Frost Euphorbia, Impatiens, and lobelias. These flowers also thrive in well-maintained flower beds, alongside lighter flowers, or when cultivated in pots on the terrace. Lastly, it is good to know that there are hardy begonias, such as the Begonia grandis.

Note: Please be aware that our young plants in mini-pots are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before they are permanently placed outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

The Summerwings Apricot Begonia flowers from June until the first frost. It is placed in a well-drained, fertile, moist soil, in full sun or partial shade. Water moderately (it does not tolerate excessive watering!) and provide frequent fertilisation for intense flowering. The Summerwings Begonia may be subject to powdery mildew. The Begonia is a frost-sensitive plant, so it does not tolerate negative temperatures. For this reason, it is often cultivated in containers that can be easily brought indoors in heated greenhouses or under a veranda at the first signs of frost. If planted in the ground, it is time to remove them and store them in a sheltered place until the following spring.
