Description

Carex oshimensis 'Everest'®, also known as Oshima Sedge, forms a small, slightly tousled, bright clump, with green-blue ribbon-like foliage edged more or less with cream-white depending on its exposure to the sun. It has discreet flowers in  autumn of small, almost black-brown spikes. This grass is superb as a border plant or in a container, in moist but well-drained soil, in partial shade to accentuate the light color of its foliage.

Carex oshimensis 'Everest'® is a sedge belonging to the Cyperaceae family. This small grass with short rhizomes forms a compact, erect and cascading clump, 30 cm (11.8 in) in height and 35 cm (13.8 in) in diameter. Its evergreen, grass-like leaves measure up to 25 cm (9.8 in) in length. Their edges are tapered and their tips cascade. The dark green-blue hue that adorns them is punctuated by a wider white-cream margin when the plant is grown in partial shade, or narrower when in full sun. In autumn, short brown-black spikes of 1 to 3 cm (1.2 in) appear among the foliage, carried on thin stems of 15 cm (5.9 in) in height.

The Oshima Everest sedge is a small, refined herb with a minimalist style, which will create a beautiful bouquet of foliage overflowing from pots. Its graphic nature means it stands alone well, but on the other hand this plant will bring a lot of lightness placed next to the lush foliage of rodgersia, the feathers of ferns, or paired with heucheras. Since this grass appreciates moist to wet soils it will naturally find its place in water gardens, on banks or along the edge of water features, where it will help with stabilisation. Plant at the edge of perennial borders. For a beautiful wild effect, plant en masse in a contemporary or countryside garden. This carex tolerates occasional drought well, allowing it to be included in rock gardens, along with cotton lavenders and artemisias.

Planting and care

The Carex oshimensis adapts to all types of soil as long as they are moist but well-drained. It tolerates periods of moderate drought well. This makes it an easy grass to successfully cultivate. It also adapts to all exposures, but its foliage will be brighter in partial shade or dappled sunlight. Water abundantly during planting, which should be done outside of freezing periods. Avoid heavy fertiliser applications. Remove damaged foliage at the end of winter by combing it, but never cut it down to the ground as you could risk killing it.
