Purchase of small begonia instead of the "dragon" variety to fill planters. Very good outcome.

Description

The Begonia (x) hybrida 'Viking Trailing Red' is a vigorous and floriferous annual begonia, with a lovely trailing habit, perfectly suited for use in hanging baskets or large pots. This bountiful variety offers beautiful flowers in a vibrant red, well complemented by dark green foliage, regardless of the weather, in partial shade or even in full sun.

The 'Viking Trailing Red' begonia is a non-hardy herbaceous perennial plant, cultivated as an annual, belonging to the begonia family. It is the result of successive hybridizations of several species native to Brazil. This variety is part of a series of very recent hybrids selected in the USA for their vigorous growth and remarkable, if not unique, bright colours. 'Viking Trailing Red' has long fleshy stems, covered with thick heart-shaped leaves, of a beautiful dark green colour with bronze reflections, very shiny, about 5 cm (2in) in length. This plant quickly reaches a height of 40 cm (16in) with a diameter of 65 cm (26in). Appearing in May-June and lasting until the first frost, its flowers are asymmetrical, cup-shaped. They face the sky and consist of rounded red petals, arranged around a small yellow center and gathered in axillary clusters.

This 'Viking Trailing Red' begonia tolerates full sun well, but it can also be placed in partial shade, especially in regions where the summer sun is scorching. It can be used in hanging baskets, troughs, balcony planters, or large flower pots. The Viking series begonias also make beautiful mass plantings, mixed with different varieties. They pair well with plants featuring light foliage and flowers, such as lobelias, annual pennisetums, bacopas, bidens, as well as petunias. For a more exotic look, they can be combined with dwarf cannas or Hedychiums to create a colorful mass planting.

Planting and care

The 'Viking Trailing Red' Begonia blooms from May-June until the first frost. It is placed in a well-drained, fertile, humus-rich and light soil, moist but not waterlogged, in full sun or partial shade. Water moderately (it doesn't tolerate excess water!) and provide frequent fertilization for intense flowering. During the growing season, it is useful to provide flowering plant fertilizer every week. Beware of snails and slugs that love to devour young plants. The Begonia can be susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis. It is frost-tender, so it does not tolerate freezing temperatures. For this reason, it is often cultivated in containers that can be easily brought indoors in greenhouses or under a heated veranda at the first signs of cold weather.
