Description

The 'Doublet White' Begonia is a beautiful pure white flowered version of the 'Doublet Pink' selection, possessing all its qualities. All its flowers resemble small double white roses. The plant forms a compact and rounded clump with shiny bronze-green foliage, very floriferous until the first frosts. This variety, with its self-cleaning faded flowers, maintains a very neat appearance, without maintenance. This easy-to-grow annual plant can be confidently adopted in containers or borders, in full sun to enhance the foliage colour, or in partial shade.

The 'Doublet' Begonia is a non-hardy herbaceous perennial plant, grown as an annual, belonging to the begonia family. It is a complex hybrid derived from several species native to Brazil. This variety is part of a series of recent selections chosen for their compact, round ball-shaped habit and their uniformly double flowers. 'Doublet White' has tender but sturdy, fleshy stems covered with tough, round, glossy, dark green leaves, approximately 5 cm (2in) long. This very bushy plant will quickly reach 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12in) in all directions. Appearing in April-May and persisting until the first frosts, its abundant flowers are all double, a very bright and fresh light pink. They are gathered in numerous terminal clusters and open among very elegant foliage, which becomes even more colourful when the plant is grown in full sun. This variety tolerates both partial shade and full sun, as well as heat and drought, without inhibiting its flowering. Its sterile flowers naturally wither and fall, reducing maintenance to a minimum.

This Begonia is ideal for full sun, but it can also be placed in partial shade. It can be used in borders, in planters, hanging baskets, or in large flowering pots. 'Doublet' Begonias pair well with light-foliaged and flowering plants such as lobelias, annual pennisetum, bacopa, bidens, as well as petunias. It is sometimes forgotten, but annual begonias can be used to hide a fence, fill a slightly empty area, or accompany a shrub that lacks color. In a more exotic spirit, a colorful border can be created by combining 'Doublet White' Begonias with cannas or hedychiums. Finally, it is good to know that there are hardy begonias, such as Begonia grandis.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively eliminated.

Planting and care

The 'Doublet' Begonia blooms from May until the first frost. It is placed in a well-drained, fertile, humus-rich and light soil, moist but not waterlogged, in full sun or partial shade. In a flowerbed, maintain a minimum spacing of 30 cm (12in) between each young plant. Water moderately (it cannot tolerate excess water!) and provide frequent fertilization for intense flowering. During the growing season, it is useful to provide flowering plant fertilizer every week. Beware of snails and slugs that love to devour young plants. It can be susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis. The Begonia is frost-tender, so it does not tolerate negative temperatures. For this reason, it is often cultivated in containers that can be easily brought indoors in greenhouses or under a heated veranda at the first sign of frost.
