Description

The Dahlia 'Mister Blue' is a variety of spectacular decorative Dahlia with its flowers in a deep red with magenta, purple, and violet reflections that attract all eyes. Not very large, but very double, they brighten up flower beds and allow for composing magnificent bouquets from summer to the first cold spells. Plant it in full sun to fully appreciate the richness of its colour!

The Dahlias, horticultural plants of the aster family, are perennial tuberous plants sensitive to frost. The botanical species that gave rise to them are originally native to the high plateaus of Mexico. Dahlias are classified into horticultural groups according to the shape of their flowers. 'Mister Blue', registered in 1996, is classified in the category of Decorative Dahlias, and in the subcategory of decorative dahlias with small flowers. In this group, the colourful ligules of the head are arranged regularly in a spiral, they can be curved towards the stem or even fringed, for example. In this variety, the heads measure 10-11 cm in diameter and their ligules are oval, slightly concave, almost horizontal. The flowering period is from July to October-November if the flowers are regularly cut. The bushy and erect plant will reach between 1 m and 1.20 m in height and 50 to 60 cm in width depending on the growing conditions. The habit is bushy and erect. The stems are hollow, ramified, and the leaves are compound with 3 or 5 denticulate lobed leaflets. The leaves are of a medium green, the stems more or less coloured in purple-brown.

To create a harmonious flower bed or bouquet with Dahlia 'Mister Blue', combine it with the ball Dahlia 'Wizard of Oz', with its round and compact flowers in a lovely pink shade. This delicate colour blends perfectly with the depth of 'Mister Blue's' red. Add the landscape Dahlia 'Bishop of Leicester', pale pink on bronze foliage. 'Magnus' Echinaceas and 'Six Hills Giant' Nepetas are interesting additions to complete this ensemble, these perennials will balance the intensity of the dahlias with their fuchsia pink and lavender blue tones. An elegant and dynamic combo for refined flower beds or bouquets!

Star plants in cottage gardens, Dahlias are undoubtedly beautiful flowers, they are perfect in flower beds, but can also enhance the vegetable garden. In Mexico, this tuberous plant was initially grown as a vegetable root to be consumed. Its poor taste qualities quickly relegated it to the status of an ornamental plant. Since then, the interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Mister Blue' is easy to grow in all regions. For abundant flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules: plant the tubers in full sun after the last frosts, rich, fresh, and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Feel free to amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with crushed horn or dehydrated blood. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, water heavily once and then repeat this watering regularly during the first 6 weeks to help with rooting.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold, they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage, it's time to pull them out. Carefully unearth the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a box on a newspaper. Store them away from frost in a dry, cool, dark place, such as a frost-free garage or attic, for example. In southern regions, close to the coast, experiencing few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a layer of leaves or straw for protection.

This Dahlia, with its hollow stems, is still sensitive to strong winds or heavy rains. To overcome this drawback, you can stake it, but let's agree, it's not very aesthetic. However, by pinching the stems early or removing the axial floral buds, you will spread out the habit of the plant, offering more resistance to bad weather. At the same time, you channel the flow of sap to a single flower that will become larger and sturdier.
