Hydrangea ‘Merveille Sanguine’ should be planted in a deep, fertile, humus-bearing, moist and well-drained soil, preferably neutral to acid. It does not need pure heather soil: an application of compost or leaf mould is sufficient in a deep, well-worked soil. Chalky soils are unsuitable for it. A bright position, in gentle sun or partial shade, encourages the purple hues of the foliage. In an oceanic climate, it tolerates more sun if the soil remains moist. It appreciates a position sheltered from cold winds and late frosts. Regular watering and mulching are beneficial during dry spells. Pot cultivation is possible in a container with drainage holes, measuring at least 50 cm in diameter.
