Description

Annual Mallow 'Twins Hot Pink' is a stunning variety that is both particularly compact and disease-resistant. The bushy plants are literally smothered in silky, flared corollas of bright pink all summer long, over lush green foliage. Grow alongside Sweet Williams, dwarf roses or sage for summer bedding schemes full of poetry and colour.

Lavatera trimestris or annual mallow belong to the Malvaceae family. It is native to the Mediterranean basin, occurring naturally in rocky, coastal areas. 'Twins Hot Pink' has been specifically bred for its excellent disease-resistance and mounding habit. It rapidly forms small, bushy plants that measure about 45 cm tall for a spread of about 35 cm. From June to September, the bright green, palmate foliage is covered in flared, bright pink trumpet-shaped blooms.

Perfect for cottage gardens, mixed borders and annual bedding schemes alongside love-in-a-mist, cosmos or flax. This compact variety is especially suited for growing in pots and hanging baskets, combined with sweet peas or snapdragons for example. For best results, provide your annual mallow plants with a sunny position, preferably sheltered from strong winds. Annual mallow thrives in light, perfectly drained soils. Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms all season long!

Planting and care

Sow in a heated greenhouse from March to May. Bury the seeds under 1 cm of soil. When the seedlings are strong enough to be handled, transplant one every 30 cm. Alternatively, direct sow from May to June when the soil is warmed through. Ideally, outdoor temperatures should be around 18°C for optimum germination rates. Germination generally takes about 14 days. Annual mallow enjoys light, well-drained soils, a sunny position that is preferably sheltered from strong winds and torrential rain.
