Description

Lavatera Twins Cool White is an annual variety with a bushy habit that stands out for its good disease resistance. It forms a branched clump of healthy foliage and is covered for three months with lots of round, white calyx flowers with satin-like reflections. This easy-to-grow plant combines many qualities. Sow it under cover or directly in moist, well-drained soil, in beds of annuals, perennials, or in pots.

Lavatera trimestris is a tender annual mallow native to the Mediterranean region. It is a cousin of wood mallows (Malva sylvestris) or marshmallow (Althea officinalis), belonging to the same family of malvaceae. The Twins Cool White variety has been selected for its resistance to rust and its compact habit. It quickly forms a small, branching bush with bright green to bluish leaves, reaching 45 cm (18in) high and 35 cm (14in) wide. The basal leaves are almost round, while those that cover the stems have palmate lobes, resembling maple leaves. It will bloom from June to September (earlier in warm climates) with pure white and satin-like, veined flowers of a good size (6 cm (2in) in diameter), solitary in the axils of the leaves. They will not last long but continuously renew themselves on the plant, especially if faded flowers are regularly removed. The large seeds contained in their black capsules are easy to grow when mature.

Annual mallows are essential in "cottage gardens", but varieties with vibrant colours easily fit in "mixed borders", beds of annuals alongside cornflowers, cosmos, or perennials such as flax, asters, or gauras. A single packet of Lavatera trimestris seeds can decorate several beds, with very fresh colours. Large-flowered lavateras are also good cut flowers. Small varieties like Twins Cool White look lovely in pots, mixed with sweet peas or snapdragons.

Planting and care

Annual mallows are sown in spring, directly in the ground, when temperatures start to warm up (germination occurs at 15°C (59°F)). Light promotes seed germination. You can also sow them in indoors in March and then transplant the young plants outdoors from May, once the last frost has passed. When the young plants reach about 20 cm (8in) high, pinch the main stems to encourage branching. Leave at least a 40 cm (16in) gap between plants.

Choose a well-exposed location, in full sun, and regular, well-drained soil to grow them in. Soil that is too rich will favour leaf growth at the expense of flowering.

For a beautiful flowering, the soil should remain moist, even humid, but without stagnant water. Mulch around the plants and water occasionally, especially during hot and dry summers.
