Description

The climbing rose TCHIC-TCHAC® 'ORAducam' is a repeat-flowering climber with moderate growth, capable of covering an arch, trellis or fence. Its large, turbinate roses are dark red with vermilion highlights and release an intense fragrance. They open in waves throughout the summer on dense, very healthy, dark green foliage. This easy-to-grow variety has a place in a romantic or more contemporary setting.

Bred in 2023 by Pierre Orard, this rose was introduced in France by Roseraies Orard in 2025. TCHIC-TCHAC® is its commercial name and 'ORAducam' its official variety name. It belongs to the group of large-flowered climbing roses; these are modern roses with long, rambling stems that are trained onto a support and flower again during the season. Its vigorous, well-branched growth reaches 2.50 to 3 m in height. Its spread depends on how it is trained; its branches can be guided in a fan shape over a support 1.50 to 2 m wide. The elongated flower buds open into 10 cm-diameter, very double, turbinate roses composed of around 60 petals. The high, tightly packed centre is arranged in a spiral, while the outer petals open out more widely. Their colour is deep red, close to crimson, with vermilion tones in places. Borne singly or in small groups of two or three, the flowers release an intense fragrance, clearly perceptible nearby. This rose belongs to the Parfums de Lyon® collection, devoted to fragrant varieties and named in reference to Lyon's rich rose-growing history. Abundant and repeat-flowering, the blooms are produced in waves from June to September, and sometimes into October depending on the climate. The leaves are deciduous and absent in winter. They are composed of oval, toothed leaflets that form dense, dark green foliage at maturity. The young shoots and young leaves, initially purple and coppery, gradually turn green as they develop. The foliage has very good resistance to common rose diseases.

On an arch or sturdy trellis, Tchic-Tchac® can be paired with the clematis 'Huldine' with pearly white flowers. In front of these two climbers, plant easy-going, generous perennials such as Geranium 'Brookside', Phlox paniculata 'Fujiyama' and Aster 'Little Carlow'. Their white, mauve and purplish-blue flowers temper the intense red of this rose in a romantic garden or against a light-coloured façade. Train the main branches almost horizontally to produce flowers along a greater part of their length.

Planting and care

The climbing rose Tchic-Tchac prefers sunny positions, but dislikes hot, enclosed sites, which can make it more susceptible to powdery mildew: avoid training it against a south- or west-facing wall. Although it does not appreciate excessive lime, it tolerates it. It prefers deep, fertile, reasonably moist soils, which allow it to reach its full potential.

It will adapt to any garden provided the ground is well prepared, well worked and sufficiently fertile.  To plant your rose, work the soil, breaking it up thoroughly, and place an amendment such as dried blood or hoof and horn at the bottom of the planting hole. Water thoroughly after planting to eliminate air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to help it establish, and during the first two summers in hot, dry weather. This rose only needs pruning to control its vigour. If its spread becomes a nuisance, do not hesitate to cut back the branches.

Care

Pruning instructions Prune repeat-flowering roses in late winter; shorten it if its spread gets in the way, but do not feel obliged to cut it back hard, as this would harm flowering. On the other hand, do not hesitate to open up the framework by removing dead wood and unsightly branches. Remove spent flowers throughout the summer to encourage even more abundant flowering.
