Description
Nicknamed the zebra cactus, Haworthia ‘Concolor’ captivates with its highly structured appearance. Not very tall, but graphic, it is well-suited to shelves, desks, or windowsills. Its fleshy foliage stores water, making it very tolerant of occasional missed waterings. It is a durable, decorative succulent plant that remains attractive all year round in a bright interior.
Haworthiopsis fasciata (syn. Haworthia fasciata) currently belongs to the Asphodelaceae family (formerly Xanthorrhoeaceae). This species is native to the southern Cape Province in South Africa, where it grows in very free-draining, rocky environments, often sheltered by rocks or low bushes.
The ‘Concolor’ selection is a horticultural form prized for its more uniformly dark green foliage with subtle raised markings. The plant forms a compact rosette about 10 to 15 cm tall with a similar spread, and over time produces a few offsets. The triangular, rigid leaves have light tubercles mainly on their outer surface, while the inner surface is smoother. This variety may flower in summer, depending on conditions. A slender flower spike 30 to 40 cm tall rises from the rosette; it bears small white tubular flowers.
To grow it indoors, provide bright light without direct sun during the hottest hours, a rather dry to normal atmosphere, and temperatures between 15 and 28°C (with a minimum around 10°C if the plant is kept dry). It is an easy plant for beginners, its main enemy being excess water in the pot. It thrives particularly well in a bright living room, office, temperate conservatory, or bright kitchen.
During the warmer season, you can move your zebra cactus outdoors, placing it in partial shade or bright light without scorching sun, and sheltered from repeated rain. It needs to be gradually acclimatised if it has spent the winter indoors. Wait until night temperatures consistently exceed 12-15°C, then bring it back inside as soon as night temperatures approach 10°C.
Placed in a bright living room, an office, or a temperate conservatory, Haworthia ‘Concolor’ is happy near a filtered window. It should be planted in a small matte ceramic, concrete, or terracotta pot, to be placed on a shelf, console table, or windowsill. This variety fits into a contemporary, minimalist setting or an interior inspired by Japandi style. To create a cohesive display, pair it with Aloe 'Safari Sunrise', Crassula 'Desert Diamond' and Echeveria setosa.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
