Description

Leucanthemum x superbum 'Alaska' is an excellent variety of Oxeye Daisy, which is vigorous and floriferous.  It has simple flowers with white petals around a yellow centre. This perennial blooms all summer in ordinary, but damp soil. A very easy plant to grow, in sun or partial shade, it will bring a decidedly rustic touch to your borders or bouquets.

Leucanthemum 'Alaska' belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is a horticultural hybrid related to the Oxeye Daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare), whose origin is believed to be a cross-breeding between a Pyrenean species and a Portuguese species. 'Alaska' measures approximately 90 cm (35in) in height when in bloom and spreads over 60 cm (24in), its growth is moderately fast. It forms an opulent clump with shiny green foliage. This foliage partially persists in winter, in the form of rosettes at ground level. Flowering renews from July to September. It takes the form of large solitary heads measuring 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter, with white ligulate (petal) flowers around a yellow centre. The leaves are lanceolate with regularly toothed edges. Their surface is glabrous.  The plant reaches full maturity in five years.

In the world of 'daisies' that we believe we know, there are flower forms that are worth seeing... we are not talking about extravagant colours here, but more the detail and the structure of the flowers that will truly bring originality to the garden. 'Leucanthemum 'Alaska', so suitable for bouquet arrangements, will be perfect in a border or as a specimen. Accompany its flowering with that of cosmos, combine it with peonies, blue lupins, bellflowers, gaillardias and red hot pokers. You will create a scene that is reminiscent of our grandmothers' gardens.

Planting and care

Plant Shasta Daisy 'Alaska' in deep, rich, moist to wet soil. This plant does not have any specific soil pH requirements. It will thrive in a sunny, or at most partially shaded, position. Ordinary garden soil, even slightly clay soil, will suit it perfectly. It can tolerate temperatures as low as -29 °C. Regularly remove faded flowers and remove dead foliage in spring. This daisy may be attacked by aphids, snails, earwigs, chrysanthemum nematodes, and may develop foliar spots.
