Description

Begonia × tuberhybrida (Pendula Group) ‘Pink’ is a tuberous begonia with a trailing habit and pink flowers. This variety forms pretty floral cascades in hanging baskets and large planters in partial shade. Flowering all summer long, it adds volume to seasonal displays. Ideal for sheltered terraces or east-facing balconies, this begonia combines charm with ease of cultivation.

Originating from the vast genus Begonia (family Begoniaceae), this hybrid belongs to the horticultural group Pendula, characterised by its trailing habit. Begonia × tuberhybrida arose from historical cross-breeding between several South American species, notably B. boliviensis, B. veitchii and B. pearcei. The Pendula Group was developed in the 19th century by European horticulturists. Breeders Troch, K. Sax and Veitch greatly contributed to the diffusion of trailing forms.
The plant forms a flattened tuber from which flexible, fleshy stems emerge each spring; the whole plant reaches 20 to 30 cm in height and 30 to 40 cm in width. Its deciduous, medium to dark glossy green foliage is asymmetrical and finely toothed. From June to September, sometimes until October, it produces numerous pendulous, single or semi-double flowers, 4 to 6 cm in diameter, of a clear, uniform pink. The male and female flowers are distinct, as with all begonias; the female ones are smaller and less decorative than the male ones. The plant enters dormancy with the first frosts, and the tuber must be stored dry at 8–10 °C.

Grow the Pink Pendula Begonia in a hanging basket, bowl or large container to make the most of its trailing habit. It pairs wonderfully with Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’, blue annual lobelias, or Euphorbia ‘Diamond Frost’, which lightens the display. To vary the hues, pair it with other begonias from the same group such as Pendula Orange, 'Pink Balcony' or Pendula White.

Planting and care

Plant your Begonia Pendula 'Pink' in a shaded or lightly sunny position, in light, moist soil rich in humus. Begonias dislike overly heavy soils; lighten your earth with compost and sand. Plant after the last frosts, one per pot around twenty centimetres, or spaced 25 cm apart in open ground. Position the tuber with the concave (hollow) part facing upwards, then cover with 5 cm of soil. As with Dahlias, you can accelerate their cycle by planting them as early as February, in sheltered pots, moving them outside in May. Water very regularly. Apply begonia fertiliser at planting, then twice a month during the season. Remove faded flowers.
Dig up the bulbs before the first frosts, and store them in a little peat, in a dry, cool place during the winter. This is a shade-loving plant that will grow better if it receives a few hours of sunlight per day. Additionally, it is quite susceptible to powdery mildew and nematodes and requires regular, but not excessive, watering.
