Description

Tulipa 'Helmar' is a dazzling variety of Triumph tulip that will create a spectacle in the garden when planted en masse. Its golden yellow cup-shaped flowers are randomly flamed and streaked with ruby red, creating colourful scenes in the garden. This fairly tall and rather late variety usually blooms in May, depending on the climate. Pair it with the soft yellow bloom of Narcissus 'Yellow Cheerfulness' to create a bright display in a spring bed, a pretty pot, or in a bouquet.

Tulipa 'Helmar' is a Dutch creation dating back to 1986. It belongs to the Liliaceae family. It is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is to have narrow cup-shaped flowers. The flowers sit at the top of 45cm (18in) tall stems, above the broadly lanceolate leaves. The single flowers are perfectly formed and richly coloured in golden yellow and ruby red, with some areas of pale-yellow/cream. They have six thick "petals" (more precisely tepals), gathered in a perfectly cup-shaped corolla. Flowering takes place towards the end of the tulip season, in early to mid-May.

Triumph tulips are renowned for their rich colours, their stunning and variegated flowers, and their suitability in both flower beds and bouquets. They are among the most planted varieties, and many varieties have become classics of cut flowers. They are unmatched for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens. When designing your flower beds, you must consider the height and flowering period of the tulips, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few extra bulbs for bouquets, as they make beautiful long-lasting cut flowers in a vase. 'Helmar' will also be enhanced by the small white flowers of chamomiles, which will bring a light and neutral touch that complements its flowering.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
