Petchoa BeautiCal Sunset Orange

x Petchoa BeautiCal Sunset Orange is part of a recent line of hybrids that combine the qualities of petunias and calibrachoas (Million Bells). It is a compact plant with a rounded habit. It flowers early in the season and lasts for months, bearing large flowers reminiscent of the warm hues of summer evenings, in a warm orange delicately marbled with golden yellow, like a setting sun. It is more water-efficient than traditional petunias, resistant to rain, and almost maintenance-free. It is perfect in borders, patios, or balconies.

x Petchoa are recent horticultural hybrids resulting from cross-breeding between petunias and calibrachoa. They are tender perennials often grown as annuals. Very similar to each other, these two types of plants differ in some morphological characteristics: calibrachoa flowers are smaller, their growth habit is shrubby or herbaceous with woody stems, their development is less significant, and they tolerate drought better. The hybrids that make up this group all belong to the Solanaceae family (like tomatoes), and likely descend from an Argentine species called Petunia integrifolia. The improved BeautiCal series stands out with its compact habit, large flowers, and good resistance to diseases, weather, and heat.

Sunset Orange quickly forms a dense clump, slightly wider than tall, reaching 25 to 30cm (10 to 12in) in height and 40 to 50cm (16 to 20in) in diameter. Its flexible stems are covered with small, lanceolate, evergreen, velvety, non-sticky dark green leaves that beautifully enhance its flowering. The single flowers are reminiscent of a setting summer sun, in a warm orange subtly marbled with golden yellow. The tireless flowering takes place from May until the first frost. The flowers measure 5 to 6cm (2in) in diameter, blooming abundantly at the axils of the leaves, covering the faded flowers which naturally fall off without remaining attached to the foliage.

Sunset Orange requires minimal maintenance as its faded flowers fall off on their own. It is ideal for hanging baskets, planters, or containers. Its heat resistance and excellent flower endurance in rainy conditions make it perfect for creating beautiful borders in sunny flower beds. It can be planted alone or accompanied by other varieties with complementary colours, such as Caramel Yellow or Cinnamon. It can also be grown in a conservatory. They look wonderful with verbenas, petunias, double bacopas, and nemesias. Grow them as annuals or bring them indoors during winter.
