Description
The White Alpine Forget-Me-Not (Myosotis alpestris) is a biennial plant with charming delicate flowering. Its small white flowers are distinguished by their simple beauty that brightens rockeries and borders. Robust and undemanding, this forget-me-not is perfect for alpine gardens and excels at bringing a wild and natural touch to flower beds. Its charm is equally effective in a planter on a balcony or window sill.
Native to the alpine regions of Europe, Myosotis alpestris belongs to the Boraginaceae family. It is most often a biennial plant that blooms in the second year before disappearing. It forms dense small clumps reaching between 10 and 30 cm in height. Its leaves are oblong to lanceolate and slightly hairy, forming a compact rosette at the base. The 0.5 to 1 cm diameter flowers are grouped in cymes and are pure white in this variety. Its flowering starts in spring, in May, and continues until July. The alpine forget-me-not is highly valued for its cold resistance, down to -25°C. It thrives in well-drained soils kept moist due to snow melt in its natural habitat. The foliage of Myosotis alpestris is semi-evergreen, meaning it retains some leaves during winter but may lose some foliage depending on climatic conditions. Myosotis alpestris readily self-seeds in the garden. It can even become somewhat invasive under certain conditions, especially in moist and well-drained soil. Its seeds, produced after flowering, germinate naturally, allowing the plant to perpetuate itself.
The white Myosotis alpestris blends perfectly in rockeries, wildflower beds, or borders. It can be paired with botanical tulips, mini daffodils, botanical peonies, and pansies, for example. These plants perfectly complement the delicate appearance of the forget-me-not and create a welcome mix of colours and textures in a natural garden. This forget-me-not is also ideal for brightening up rockeries and adding a floral touch to walls or embankments.

Planting and care
Sow Myosotis alpestris in summer (June to August) if you want flowering the following spring. Sow the seeds on the surface, in well-drained, light, and moist soil. It is best to sow indoors or in a nursery. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost or sand and water gently to avoid displacing the seeds. Germination takes about 10 to 20 days at an optimal temperature of 15 to 20°C.
Transplant the seedlings with a few leaves into the ground in autumn. Maintain a spacing of 20 to 30 cm between each plant to ensure good ventilation and prevent diseases. The plants will flower the following spring.
Myosotis alpestris prefers well-drained, slightly moist soil rich in organic matter (compost, humus). Choose a location with partial shade or full sun, but avoid areas that are too exposed to scorching sun, especially in hot regions. It tolerates cold temperatures well and can withstand harsh winters down to -25°C. Water regularly in prolonged drought, but do not let the soil become waterlogged, as excess moisture can lead to root rot. Remove faded flowers to promote continuous flowering and limit self-seeding: this myosotis self-seeds easily and can become invasive.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
