Sunflower Gold and Silver seeds - Helianthus argophyllus

Helianthus argophyllus ‘Gold and Silver’ is a surprising and elegant annual sunflower with captivating, silky, silver-hued foliage and large, bright yellow flowers with dark centres. This upright and bushy plant forms a luminous clump that draws the eye in summer borders, and its flowers are perfect for rustic bouquets. Helianthus argophyllus 'Gold and Silver' is a plant from the Asteraceae family. Nicknamed the "silverleaf sunflower" or "silver sunflower", the species is native to the coastal regions of Texas, USA, where it grows naturally in sandy soils near the coast. It has been introduced and naturalised in other regions, notably in Florida, North Carolina, as well as in parts of Africa, Australia, and Indonesia. 
The life cycle of Helianthus argophyllus is strictly annual: the plant germinates, flowers, produces seeds, and dies within a single growing season.

The 'Gold and Silver' cultivar is an improved horticultural selection of the species. This variety is distinguished by its silver foliage and abundant flowering, offering increased ornamental interest compared to the wild species. The plant has an upright and branching habit, reaching a height of 1.5 m, or even more under optimal conditions. The plant's spread varies between 45 and 60 cm. Flowering occurs 12 to 14 weeks after sowing. The stems are robust, covered in fine hairs that give them a characteristic silvery hue. The leaves measure between 15 and 25 cm long and 10 to 20 cm wide; they have a downy texture due to a high density of hairs or trichomes. The foliage disappears with the arrival of the first frosts. The inflorescences, typical of the Asteraceae, are heads composed of 15 to 20 yellow ligulate florets surrounding a central disc of over 150 tiny fertile tubular florets. Each head measures approximately 10 cm in diameter. Flowering extends from July to October, attracting a variety of pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies. The fruits are oval-shaped achenes (or caryopses), measuring between 4 and 6 mm long. Although technically edible, these seeds are primarily used for reproduction or for feeding birds. The root system is a taproot, promoting good anchorage and some tolerance to drought.

Helianthus argophyllus is used in breeding programmes for the cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus). Due to its drought tolerance and resistance to certain diseases, this wild species has been used to introduce beneficial genes into cultivated lines, thereby improving their resilience.

In the garden, the 'Gold and Silver' sunflower is a star of sunny summer borders. It brings light and height to floral compositions and integrates wonderfully into a natural or bohemian atmosphere. This superb variety forms a backdrop for a perennial border, can be placed at the edge of a vegetable patch, or in a cut flower garden. Pair it with the white Sunflower 'Italian White', deep red Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Rubenza’, Argentinian Vervain (Verbena bonariensis) for its light violet flowers, and Green Amaranth 'Viridis' for its long, anise-green clusters.
