Description

Gazania 'Zany Sunny Side Up' stands out with its stunning combination of colours, giving it an incomparable look. This cultivar is impressive with its uniform growth and its abundance of large flowers whose colour remains stable. In addition, its flowers open earlier in the season and persist longer even in cooler or cloudier weather. It is easy to grow and low-maintenance, equally attractive planted in a pot or planter on a terrace or balcony or in a low bed, rock garden, or integrated into large landscape compositions. This plant is exceptionally heat-resistant and thrives particularly well in full sun.

Gazania rigens, also known as Gazania, is a plant belonging to the extensive family of Asteraceae. Native to South Africa and Mozambique, it is distinguished by its bright yellow flower heads, with an orange heart sprinkled with touches of black and brown. Although it is a perennial herbaceous plant, Gazania is often grown as an annual in cool and humid climates. In Mediterranean climates, it can sometimes survive as a perennial due to the relatively mild winter and the dryness of its environment.

The hybrid Gazania 'Zany Sunny Side Up' is a horticultural creation by the seed producer Benary. In August 2023, it was awarded the Fleuroselect Gold Medal 2024 in the United Kingdom, a highly coveted distinction for innovation, beauty, and garden performance. Gazania 'Zany Sunny Side Up' is a more compact variety, measuring 20 cm (8in) in height and spread. This plant forms a small clump of basal leaves that give rise to numerous stems each bearing a single flower head. These leaves are tough and have a medium green colour on their upper surface, while their undersides are silver-toned. It offers an early and extended flowering that renews from May to October, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed. The solitary flowers appear at the end of the stems and resemble large daisies. They measure an average of 6 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter. The petals, called ligules in Asteraceae, are arranged around the centre. They are a bright golden orange towards the centre, fading into light yellow towards the tip. In the centre of the flower are tubular central florets, giving the flower a velvety texture. It is important to note that the flowers tend to close in the absence of sunlight.

Gazania 'Zany Sunny Side Up' is highly valued for its abundant and regular flowering from spring to autumn, as well as its ability to withstand dry conditions in sunny areas. Thanks to its compact habit and dense foliage, it exudes elegance and lightness that harmoniously blend with the surrounding plants. Gardening enthusiasts will be amazed by the unique and contrasting colour combination of Gazania 'Zany Sunny Side Up', which adds a spectacular touch to any container arrangements or garden. This Gazania adapts well to coastal gardens, where it can thrive in sandy, light, poor soils, enduring drought, full sun, wind, and sea spray.

Planting and care

Soak the seeds for a few hours then sow under glass, from February to April. Bury them under 3 mm (0in) of a mixture of compost and sand. Keep them in a warm place, ideally with temperatures ranging from 18 to 25°C (64.4 to 77°F). Keep the compost slightly moist without excess. You will need to wait 14 to 30 days to see the young seedlings appear. When they are large enough to handle, transplant them into pots where you will acclimatise them for about ten days before planting them outdoors when the last frosts are finished. Make sure to space each plant 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12in) apart.

Cultivation: in full sun, in ordinary but well-drained soil, possibly lightened with gravel, sand, and compost. Gazanias dislike stagnant moisture, so avoid leaving water-filled saucers under the pots. A flowering plant fertiliser will be appreciated.
