Planting and care

Hellebores grow in most soils. They thrive in soil that has been deeply worked and mixed with a quantity of organic matter. For fertilisation, use bone meal or another organic fertiliser. In acidic soil, preferably add a little lime. Water the plants well after planting and then add a layer of mulch 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in) thick. Regularly remove wilted leaves. For species with leaves emerging from the ground, such as Helleborus orientalis, cut most of the leaves to make the flowers stand out. Be careful not to plant the plants too close together, in order to promote their development.
