Description

This pair of Omphalodes cappadocica brings together two horticultural varieties named 'Cherry Ingram' and 'Starry Eyes'. These small perennials, very cold-resistant, spread on the ground through stolons and form clusters of small flowers in April-May that resemble forget-me-nots. They form a carpet not exceeding 20-25cm (8-10in) in height and bloom in a cool harmony of blue and white. You will plant these perennials in cool and semi-shaded areas of the garden, especially in light woods.

The collection consists of:

- x 1 Omphalodes cappadocica 'Cherry Ingram' : an award-winning variety in England in 1993 for its ornamental qualities and garden performance. Clusters composed of three to twelve flowers with 5 petals measuring 5 to 7mm (0in) in diameter, of a deep blue colour.

- x 1 Omphalodes cappadocica 'Starry Eyes': a variety producing lovely bicoloured flowers, adorned with a porcelain blue star pattern on a white background. It is slightly less vigorous than the previous one.

Omphalodes cappadocica is a perennial plant with deciduous foliage that emerges in spring and disappears in winter. It spreads laterally through stolons and bears lanceolate leaves of light green color. Flowering occurs from April to early June, depending on the climate.

This pair of Omphalodes eventually forms a delightful ground cover to be installed in a light and cool woodland, under deciduous bushes with light foliage, in soil rich in humus or compost that remains slightly moist even in summer. Plant it in partial shade, with 2 plants per m². Young plants can be placed among clumps of Japanese anemones, white and blue bluebell hyacinths, or Epimediums. In a shaded and humid rockery, Omphalodes will create a path among large mossy stones. These plants will also make a lovely border along a pathway exposed to the morning sun. They beautify year after year without requiring maintenance. Their flowering will take over from that of Hepaticas and fragrant violets that appreciate the same environments.

Planting and care

Omphalodes cappadocica appreciates partial shade. Plant it in a humus-bearing soil (rich in leaf compost) that is fairly light and does not excessively dry out in summer. It also adapts to slightly chalky or clayey and acidic soils if well-drained. This plant is very easy to grow and does not require any special care. In late winter, remove any foliage that has been damaged by cold and rain. Do not divide the clump before 4 years of growth. Beware of snails and slugs that like it.
