Description

The Hellebore nigercors Candy Love® is a hybrid derived from Helleborus niger (Christmas Rose) and Helleborus argutifolius (Corsican Hellebore). From December to March, large flowers with white-pink corollas appear, fading to shades of purple, measuring 7 to 10 cm (3.9 in) in diameter. The Hellebore has a bushy habit. This Hellebore is hardy down to -20°C. It has winter interest.

It is a sturdy plant, not too tall (30 cm (11.8 in) in height) with very attractive dark green foliage that is evergreen and quite tough. Its basal and palmatilobate leaves (palmate leaves with shallow lobes) measure 10 to 30 cm (11.8 in) in length. The foliage is evergreen. One of its main attractions is its long and exuberant flowering. From the first year, more than twenty flowers should be produced on the plants. New flowers constantly form, providing a beautiful contrast between the open and faded flowers.

It is perfect as a cut flower. It also provides good ground cover. It pairs well with ferns or with Iris foetidissima, lamium maculatum 'Beacon Silver', and Erythronium. It is a toxic flower. It is a sterile hybrid, which means it cannot reproduce through vegetative means easily.

Planting and care

The Hellebore nigercors Candy Love prefers rich, heavy and well-worked soils. It grows best in partially shaded areas with neutral to alkaline, fertile, humus-rich, moist soil. Incorporating good compost will help it establish. Avoid planting where stagnant water can pool, as it may cause the plant to rot. The best location for planting is under the dappled shade of large leafy trees. These plants are low-maintenance, but they don't like to be stressed. Once well-established, they do not want to be transplanted. It may take 2 to 3 years for young plants to flower, sometimes more, but then there will be no more problems. Over time, the colour of the flowers deepens, and they do not wilt like most flowers; instead, they dry up.
