Description

The early double Tulip 'Fantasy Lady' stands out from other tulip varieties with its unique flowering in the early days of spring. Its flower with shades of pink and white, emitting a subtle fragrance, brings charm and voluptuousness. With its long rigid stems, it withstands inclement weather well. It is ideal for flowerbeds and bouquets. Its flowering follows that of early single tulips.

The early double Tulip 'Fantasy Lady' belongs to the Lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is classified in the group of early doubles, whose main characteristic is to bloom at the same height, making it a category appreciated by enthusiasts of well-ordered flowerbeds. Perched on sturdy stems of 35-45 cm (14-18in), just above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the double flowers, 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5in) wide when fully open, unfold into a dense and colourful array of petals. With a superb colour, the flowers are composed of tinted petals, shading from dark pink in the centre to light pink and creamy white at the edges. Flowering takes place in April, in the heart of the tulip season. The foliage, composed of beautiful glaucous green lanceolate leaves, yellows and then dries a few weeks after flowering, while the bulb enters a period of rest.

Early double tulips bring originality of colours to your flowerbeds or bouquets, while combining the qualities of good durability and resistance to climatic fluctuations. Don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flowerbeds, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make stunning cut flowers that last a long time in a vase. The 'Fantasy Lady' tulip is easy to integrate into all styles of gardens. In a contemporary garden, it pairs for a wonderful contrast with Triumph 'Fontainebleau' or early double 'Palmyra'. With its double flowers in shades of pink, mauve, and white, it will bring charm to a romantically inspired garden alongside tender pink tulips like early double 'Foxtrot' or early double 'Flashpoint'. In a natural garden, forget-me-nots, wood hyacinths, or grape hyacinths will enhance its warm tones.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Fantasy Lady' tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-tilled, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips will thrive in moist to dry soil in summer. Place them in a good exposure, sunny or semi-shaded. Once the flowering is over, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
