Collection items (3 plants)

Description

This collection brings together 3 varieties of hybrid gaillardia of different colours, offered at a very preferential price. They are short-lived perennial plants, but particularly frugal and robust. Their only flaw is that they do not tolerate ambient moisture well, even in well-drained soil. They quickly form a small bushy clump that flowers tirelessly between June and October, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed.

The collection consists of 3 plants:

- x 1 Blanket Flower Gaillardia x grandiflora 'Burgunder': flowers of 5 cm in diameter, intense burgundy red with a yellow and blood red centre. 60 cm in height

- x 1 Blanket Flower Gaillardia x grandiflora 'Royale': flowers with a diameter of 6 cm, bicoloured in red and bright yellow. 70 cm in height

- x 1 Blanket Flower Gaillardia x grandiflora Kobold (Goblin): a more compact variety (35 cm in height) with flowers measuring 5 cm in diameter, orange-red bordered with yellow.

Gaillardias are popular for their endless flowering and their very low requirements. Place them in a sunny corner of the garden, in soil that does not retain too much water, even chalky, poor and rather dry in summer. A raised border or a slope will allow them to flourish. The blanket flower occupies about 50 cm of ground: take this into account when planting! As it needs sunlight, place it in front of taller plants that could shade it. With their brightly coloured flowers, the gaillardia in this collection go very well with marigolds, gauras, and small grasses like Stipa tenuifolia. Play with complementary colours by combining them with blue-flowered salvia or by sowing Love-in-a-mist among their clumps.

Planting and care

Plant in early spring or early autumn in a sunny position. Resilient, gaillardia tolerate heat, cold, drought, limestone, wind, and poor soil. In summer, even a little rain or a small amount of watering during prolonged dry spells will revive the flowering. Plant them in well-drained soil, in full sun, and stake the taller varieties if necessary. In cooler climates, the stumps gain in strength what you sacrifice in flowers: pruning the stems in late September, 10 cm from the ground, helps them survive the winter.
