Description

The 'Pink Mystery' Rose bush will delight gardeners who appreciate natural varieties. It is a bush resulting from cross-breeding three vigorous and perpetual botanical roses. It produces small bouquets of simple flowers in a mauve pink colour throughout the beautiful, fragrant season. Its elegant, light green foliage is very healthy, reminiscent of rugosa roses. And like a garden reflects its gardener, 'Pink Mystery' will faithfully accompany all unpretentious plants in a slightly wild and romantic garden.

While modern roses are often criticised for their stiffness and weak disease resistance, the 'Pink Mystery' variety, created by L. Lens in 1997, breaks the mould. It is a hybrid resulting from the cross-breeding of Rosa stellata mirifica on one hand and a hybrid between R. bracteata and R. nutkana on the other. This 'Pink Mystery' rose forms a slightly spreading bushy shrub with flexible branches. Its height will reach between 1.20 m (4ft) and 1.50 m (5ft), with a base width of 80-90 cm (32-35in). Its stems are thin, thorny, and greyish-brown in colour. It blooms from June until October. Each flower, measuring 6 cm (2in) in diameter, has five relatively narrow petals in a mauve pink colour. The centre of the flower is widely open to bees and other pollinating insects. The flowers appear at the end of the branches in clusters of 5 to 9 units. Like in the Rosa bracteata, they bloom in pairs or threes and are highly fragrant. The leaf comprises long, toothed leaflets in vibrant green colour. It is bare in winter. The hardiness of this rose is estimated at -15 °C (5°F).

The Pink Mystery hybrid rose, with its botanical rose appearance, will easily find its place in the garden of an enthusiast. It is perfect in a flower bed of robust bushes or perennials and a small country hedge. Pair it with pretty, easy-to-grow plants like hardy geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), campanulas (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, landscape roses. Easily create country-style scenes by planting them with dwarf abelias or viburnums.

Planting and care

To plant your 'Pink Mystery' rose, work the soil to a depth of 30 cm (12in) by crumbling the soil and placing a bottom amendment such as blood, fish and bone in the planting hole. Position your young plant, removed from its pot, by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, fill in and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. Regular watering is necessary for a few weeks in dry weather to facilitate root growth. Also, remember to provide your rose with special rose fertiliser that stimulates flowering.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
