Le Fagus sylvatica 'Marmor Star', appelé également Hêtre panaché, est un arbre au développement modéré, ce qui permet son utilisation même dans les petits jardins. Son feuillage coloré et sa silhouette équilibrée offrent un spectacle unique et décoratif, toute l’année. Les premières feuilles vertes au printemps laissent la place, lors d’une deuxième pousse, à des feuilles largement panachées de blanc crème. Ce feuillage très lumineux se pare d'un brun jaune en automne, puis marron brunâtre pour persister tout l’hiver sur l’arbre, on parle alors d’un feuillage marcescent. Avec une longue durée de vie, il faut lui trouver un emplacement adéquat pour qu'il puisse s'épanouir en un beau spécimen, peu exigeant.
Le Fagus sylvatica, communément appelé hêtre commun, est une espèce d'arbres à feuilles caduques, indigène d'Europe et fait partie de la famille des Fagaceae, comme le chêne et le châtaignier. Il est l'une des principales essences forestières des forêts tempérées caducifoliées en Europe. On le trouve dans des hêtraies pures et, plus souvent, avec d'autres espèces, dans des forêts feuillues, principalement avec le Chêne rouvre ou dans des forêts mixtes avec le sapin blanc ou l'Épicéa commun. Il est une indication du climat tempéré humide. Les forestiers l'utilisent pour produire du bois de futaie pour l'ameublement et, dans les zones de montagne, pour le bois de chauffage.
La variété ‘Marmor Star’, dont l'origine est assez mal connue, aurait été trouvée en Allemagne et serait issue d’un semis de Fagus sylvatica 'Marmorata'. D’une longue durée de vie, elle forme un petit arbre, dense et ramifié, au port étalé et à la cime arrondie. De croissance assez lente, il peut atteindre, au bout de 10 ans, une hauteur de 3 à 4 m et à l’âge adulte une hauteur de 6 à 8 m pour une envergure de 3 à 5 m. Les jeunes rameaux sont rougeâtres et les écorces lisses et grisâtres. Les feuilles sont alternes, pétiolées, de 4 à 8 cm de long, ondulées sur le contour du limbe. Les premières feuilles du printemps sont presque entièrement vertes et c’est lors de la deuxième pousse de feuilles que celles-ci prennent la panachure blanc crème. En automne, le feuillage prend des teintes jaune-brunâtre, et reste accroché sur l’arbre en hiver pour ne tomber qu’à l’apparition des nouvelles feuilles. Au printemps, vers avril-mai, la floraison est discrète, assez insignifiante. Les fleurs mâles, réunies en chatons pendants de 40 à 60 mm, sont de couleur jaune pâle, tandis que les fleurs femelles vertes sont regroupées par 2 à 4 dans un involucre au bout des rameaux. En automne, les faines, qui sont les fruits du hêtre, commencent à apparaître, sous la forme d'étonnantes bogues ligneuses hérissées de pointes.
Le Hêtre panaché est une variété d'arbre robuste et résistante au froid hivernal (jusqu'à -30C°). Sa silhouette élégante et son feuillage coloré apportent une touche d'originalité à votre paysage. Il peut s'adapter aux petits jardins et peut être planté seul ou en groupe, pour une ombre tamisée ou pour ajouter de la couleur et de la lumière au jardin. Il s'adapte aux sols légèrement acides à alcalins, profonds, bien drainés et riches en humus. Une exposition ensoleillée est préférable, même s’il tolère un endroit légèrement ombragé. Attention, il est sensible à l'eau stagnante et aux conditions de manque d'eau, avec des feuilles brûlées en cas de forte chaleur. Son système racinaire superficiel, exclu toute plantation à son pied.

Plantez votre Fagus sylvatica Marmor Star en automne ou au printemps, choisissez un emplacement dégagé, au soleil non brûlant, où le sol est profond et gardez à l’esprit la place qu’il prendra à terme. Si nécessaire, aménagez-lui une fosse de drainage avec des cailloux si votre sol est asphyxiant. Si votre sol est pauvre, un apport de terreau de feuilles sera bénéfique. Maintenez un arrosage régulier durant l’été qui suit la plantation et veillez à le préserver des sécheresses trop longues pendant une année encore, un paillage peut vous aider à garder la fraîcheur au pied et espacez les arrosages. Il convient de garder à l'esprit que cet arbre a besoin d'un sol frais en permanence, au moins en profondeur. Il est parfaitement résistant au gel. En février-mars, lorsque l'arbre est au repos, la taille consiste à équilibrer, tous les 3 ans environ, le port de l’arbre en aérant le centre du houppier. Attention aux pucerons et cochenilles ainsi qu'au mildiou.
