This variety produces delicious globular and compact umbels filled with light blue flowers striped with dark blue. Its tall floral stems emerge in summer from a beautiful tuft of ribbon-like leaves of a brilliant green, evergreen in winter. Not hardy (-5°C (23°F)), but drought-resistant, this variety can be planted in the ground in coastal gardens. Elsewhere, it can be cultivated in a pot to overwinter frost-free. Easy to grow in the sun, in good rich and well-drained soil.

Description

Agapanthus 'Full Moon' is an Agapanthus that admirably lives up to its name of "full moon" with its perfectly round umbels filled with flowers. "Blue moon" would also perfectly describe its delicate light lavender blue colour streaked with darker blue. Flowers that stand tall above a beautiful clump of ribbon-like leaves, evergreen in winter. Like all evergreen agapanthus, this variety is not very hardy, but less demanding in water than deciduous varieties. Particularly suitable for the Atlantic coast or the Mediterranean coast, this selection also adapts perfectly to container cultivation, which allows it to overwinter in colder regions. And its flowers are superb in bouquets.

Agapanthus are plants of the lily family originating from South Africa. Several species have been extensively hybridized by horticulturists in search of new colours, more compact and hardier plants, better adapted to our climates. The 'Full Moon' cultivar is a descendant of Agapanthus praecox subsp. orientalis, a very beautiful evergreen plant sought after for its large dense umbels. This 'Full Moon' variety was selected by Richard Jamieson in South Africa. This perennial plant develops and multiplies rapidly from a powerful rootstock with fleshy rhizomes, forming over time a dense clump of linear foliage, bright and shiny green, about 50cm (20in) in all directions. The spectacular flowering occurs between July and August depending on the climate. Cylindrical flower stems up to 90cm (35in) tall emerge from the foliage clump. They bear at their tips compact spherical umbels, of modest size, but composed of numerous trumpet-shaped flowers. Each flower is composed of 6 petals fused into a tube at the base, of a pale lavender blue colour, crossed by a line of darker blue. The foliage of this variety remains evergreen in winter.

Agapanthus 'Full Moon' is a plant that is not very hardy, but of great ornamental value. It brings a lot of character to a coastal garden or an urban terrace, in a contemporary or exotic setting. This variety will easily adapt in our milder winter regions, without requiring much maintenance. Whether in a mass planting, as a border, in a large rock garden, in a pot or container, Agapanthus is suitable for a wide range of uses. It is particularly well-suited to coastal climates. 'Full Moon' is very beautiful when associated with other blue, mauve or white varieties in a minimalist setting. It is also very decorative in exotic-themed plantings with DianellaKniphofiasHemerocallisgrasses and Cannas.

Planting and care

Plant the stumps of Agapanthus 'Full Moon' by covering them with at least 10cm (4in) of good soil, this way they are more resistant to cold. It is essential to plant them in spring and preferable to mulch them in winter in most of our regions. For pot cultivation, use 5 young plants for a 24cm (9in) pot and shelter your pots in winter. They prefer a rich and moist soil, but well-drained, enriched with sand. Water them regularly during the growth period (twice a week). Avoid watering them afterwards. They fear excessive humidity in winter. This variety is hardy up to approximately -5°C in a sheltered position, it withstands drought quite well and thrives especially by the seaside. Its foliage can be damaged from -3°C. A well-drained sandy mixture, slightly acidic to slightly alkaline, should be used. This plant seems to prefer shallow but wide containers, and will flower abundantly if regularly fed with slow-release fertilizer.
