Description

Agapanthus 'White Baby' is a dwarf variety of Agapanthus, reaching a height of 40cm (16in). In summer, its creamy flower buds open into pure white umbels, held above a tuft of ribbon-like foliage. This foliage is evergreen in mild climates, this variety can tolerate temperatures down to about -10°C. The flowers, which usually appear between June and August, are opulent for its size, measuring up to 15cm (6in) in diameter. This Agapanthus can be planted in the ground, in a sheltered location and with good winter protection, in many regions. Easy to grow, it tolerates drought quite well.

Agapanthus are plants of the Amaryllidaceae family (formerly Liliaceae), native to South Africa. Agapanthus 'White Baby' is a hybrid cultivar distinguished by its compact growth. This plant develops and multiplies from a stump with fleshy rhizomes, forming a dense clump of narrow, dark green, shiny foliage, 40cm (16in) in diameter. The abundant flowering takes place in summer, more or less early depending on the climate, and lasts about 6 weeks. Sturdy stems, 30cm (12in) tall, bear large hemispherical umbels composed of about twenty small campanulate flowers in pure white, carried by long peduncles.

Agapanthus 'White Baby' is an elegant variety of small size to be integrated into the foreground of borders or in pots with Gauras, Eryngiums, Sages. It brings an exotic touch to sunny gardens, while effectively covering the ground with its beautiful foliage throughout the year. This semi-hardy variety should be placed in a protected, south-facing location, and don't forget to apply a thick mulch at its base. Agapanthus 'White Baby' is suitable for various environments. It is particularly suited to mild coastal climates. In harsher regions, it is perfect in a pot to be stored indoors each winter. It is very beautiful when associated with other mauve or blue varieties in a minimalist setting with some blue grasses. It is also very decorative in borders with Daylilies, Delphiniums, Clematis.

Planting and care

Plant the stumps of Agapanthus 'White Baby' by covering them with at least 10cm (4in) of good soil, this way they are more resistant to cold weather. It is essential to install them in spring and mulch them in winter in mild climates. For pot cultivation, use 5 young plants for a 24cm (9in) pot and protect your pots in winter. They prefer a rich and moist, but well-drained soil, enriched with sand. Water them regularly during the growth period (twice a week). However, avoid watering them afterwards. They are sensitive to excessive moisture in winter. In pots, a well-drained sandy mixture, slightly acidic, should be used. This plant seems to prefer shallow containers and will flower abundantly if regularly fed with slow-release fertilizer.
