Description
Nepeta grandiflora 'Summer Magic' was selected at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2013, and is one of the most reliable and floriferous giant catnips. This dwarf variety with grey-green, aromatic foliage keeps producing large spikes of lavender-blue nectar-rich flowers from May to October if the soil remains slightly moist. It is so undemanding that it will be satisfied with a very sunny exposure and well-drained soil, even poor, limestone or clay. A beautiful companion for heucheras, saxifrages, and old or English roses!
Nepeta belong to the lamiaceae or labiates family. 'Summer Magic' is a very beautiful selection of N. grandiflora, a dwarf but floriferous form of this large perennial native to the Caucasus. It is very hardy, similar in appearance to 'Six Hills Giant', but more robust, its floral spikes are denser, taller, and stand for a very long time. This perennial forms an upright, dense, and bushy clump, 35 cm (14in) tall, with a spread of at least 45 cm (18in), reaching its mature size in one year. The flowering extends from May-June to September-October. The flowers are grouped in spikes, are 1 cm (0in) long and remain open from dawn to dusk. They are nectar-rich and attract many bees and butterflies. The leaves are small, dark green-grey and very aromatic when crushed, oval, serrated, slightly hairy, and 2 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) long. It is one of the most compact and floriferous varieties and tolerates occasional drought. The leaves are attractive to cats.
Nepeta grandiflora 'Summer Magic' is a remarkable, easy to grow plant for borders and flower beds at the base of pink roses (Mme Isaac Péreire, Stanwell Perpetual, Ispahan), yellow roses like 'Charles Darwin', or pink-orange roses like 'Westerland', to conceal their unsightly base. In a flower bed, it goes well with columbines, valerians, and 'Canon Went' linaria, in the second row behind carnations or perennial geraniums, in front of flowering shrubs like abelias, kolkwitzias, or broom (cytisus scoparius). It also works very well as large ground cover on slopes, with gauras and scabious. It needs space and sunlight to give its best. Planted with Stachys 'Silver Carpet', Alchemilla mollis and pretty grasses like Andropogon gerardii or yellow daylilies (citrina), it can be remarkable.
Fun fact: Catnip is a sort of drug for some cats. They rub against the plant for several minutes to get a pleasant feeling for up to 2 hours. But don't worry, it is harmless.

Planting and care
Nepeta grandiflora Summer Magic grows in sunny, light, even poor, limestone and stony soils. It likes moist soils but will adapt to summer drought by reducing its flowering. In heavy soils, dig a hole three times larger than the pot and mix 1/3 gravel and 1/3 sand with your topsoil to lighten it and prevent water stagnation in winter. In the middle of summer, after the first wave of flowering, you can trim the faded flowers to 20 cm (8in) using pruning shears. The plant will be more compact and bloom again in autumn.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
