Everlasting flowers, or Helichrysum, are annual or perennial plants whose flowers retain their shape and colour once dried. Offered in the form of seeds (Double-flowered mixed bract Immortelle), the double-bract everlasting, Helichrysum bracteatum, (Bracteantha bracteata) is famous for its flower heads with rigid pearly bracts. It has given rise to numerous varieties such as the double salmon monstrous bracted everlasting whose large flowers are used in dried bouquets or paperweights. These flowers offer a wide range of colours, from the brightest to pearly seashell tones ('Pastel Mixture').
In dry gardens, Helichrysum italicum, or Italian everlasting, is sown for its silver foliage with a curry scent and small yellow flowers.
Everlasting are sown under cover in spring to be transplanted into the ground after the last frost. These plants require a sunny exposure and well-drained soil. They tolerate drought well and require little maintenance, making them ideal plants for dry gardens or seaside locations. They are also popular for the persistence of their colour in dried compositions and bouquets.
