La Ratibida, surnommée Chapeau mexicain ou encore Sombrero, est une belle plante vivace mellifère, de la famille des Asteracées native du Mexique et d'Amérique du Nord, tout comme l'échinacée à laquelle elle ressemble un peu.
Le genre comporte 7 espèces, parmi lesquelles on cultive surtout Ratibida pinnata, aux fleurs jaunes atteignant 1.50 m de hauteur, R.columnifera et sa variété Pulcherrima, plus basses (50 à 70 cm), richement colorée de rouge brique. Chez cette plante, la fantaisie s'exprime dans le découpage du feuillage, la forme et le motif qui peint les pétales, mais la palette des couleurs est peu étendue entre l'acajou, le rouge et le jaune. Semblable à une marguerite au cœur proéminent et aux pétales veloutés, cette plante des prairies américaines apporte une touche naturelle et doucement pittoresque aux massifs.
La ratibida est une plante rustique, résistante à la sécheresse, peu exigeante, très florifère, mais de courte vie. Elle a toute sa place dans les décors champêtres, en particulier avec des graminées, des cosmos ou des nigelles. Et ses fleurs coupées tiennent bien en vase.
