The bitter orange tree or Seville orange tree (Citrus aurantium) has produced several varieties, such as 'Bouquet de Fleur' or the 'Double-Flowered Bouquetier of Nice' selected in Grasse for neroli production. But also curiosities like the "Bizzaria" from Florence, whose atypical fruits are a mix of orange and lemon.
Citrus aurantium is a bush of the rutaceae family whose bitter orange fruit, leaves, branches, and fragrant flowers have many pharmaceutical, food, and perfumery applications. It is also a grafting stock for other citrus trees, widely used for its tolerance to limestone.
Bitter orange trees are fruit trees with a rounded habit, reaching 3 to 5 m in height when planted in the ground, with tough, glossy dark green leaves. In spring, their white, single or double flowers exhale a sweet fragrance, while their fruits are known for making orange marmalade.
These trees appreciate a sunny exposure, warmth, and well-drained, rich soil. Hardy down to -8°C, they can be grown in the ground in mild regions or in containers to overwinter frost-free.
