How to grow beautiful dahlias?
Our tips
Contents
Dahlias are easy to care for but still require some attention to display their spectacular blooms.
Plant them right
- When planting, add manure to the soil or a slow-release organic fertiliser to encourage growth and flowering.
- Protect them from slugs, which are fond of young shoots. Take preventive measures by scattering organic ferramol-based pellets around the plants or by creating a barrier of wood ash or sawdust around the base.
Pamper them!
Some varieties can reach over 1m in height. Stake the stems using bamboo or chestnut canes. Also bear in mind that the clumps will spread: insert 3 to 5 stakes per plant, connecting them together with string.
Keep them watered!
Dahlias thrive on nutrients and water. During dry spells, water them generously initially once a week, increasing to twice weekly during flowering if needed. To retain moisture between waterings, remember to mulch around the base (using hemp or flax mulch, or a layer of grass clippings).
