From the most classic to the most original, refined or simple, exotic or understated, there are all kinds of Dahlias to suit every taste. However, they share one common trait: they are cherished for their exceptionally long, uninterrupted flowering period, starting in summer and lasting until the first autumn frosts. In recent years, these qualities have brought Dahlias back into the spotlight, whether in pots or planted directly in the garden. You can even achieve even more abundant flowering with a few simple techniques. Discover in our tutorial how to pinch Dahlias to get more flowers throughout the summer!

Pinching Dahlias will result in abundant flowering (here: Decorative Dahlia 'Duke Duweno').

Why pinch Dahlias?

By pinching your Dahlia, that is, by cutting the tip of the main stem, you will encourage it to produce two lateral shoots instead of just one central one. This way, the plant will branch out and become denser. It will then form more stems and therefore more flowers. Note that pinching delays flowering by one to two weeks, but it will be more abundant and longer-lasting, potentially stretching into October.

Additionally, the Dahlia will have a more spreading habit and will be more vigorous. The plant will then be more resistant to bad weather and may not even need staking.

When to pinch Dahlias?

Young Dahlia shoots should be pinched in late spring or early summer, depending on the region. This is done when the plant has 4 to 5 sets of leaves. At this stage, it usually measures between 20 and 30 cm in height.

During the summer season, you can also encourage the Dahlia to rebloom by removing faded flowers, as well as by picking fresh flowers to create beautiful, colourful bouquets.

How to pinch Dahlias?

What do I need?

  • Dahlias can be pinched simply by hand, with secateurs or scissors.
  • To cut flower stems, also use secateurs or a small garden knife to make a clean cut without damaging the plant.
  • Remember to clean and disinfect your tools before use to prevent the spread of diseases from one plant to another.

How to pinch Dahlias correctly?

  • Examine your Dahlia. It should be 20 to 30 cm tall and have 4 to 5 sets of leaves.
  • Grasp the tip of the central stem between your thumb and forefinger, just above the last pair of leaves. Pinch firmly and cut the stem with your nails. If you're worried about damaging the rest of the plant, you can use secateurs.

  • Your Dahlia will then quickly produce 2 lateral stems.
  • After this step, remember to water your Dahlia generously, at least twice a week. It is particularly thirsty during its growth phase.

Make bouquets

When you cut your Dahlia flowers to create stunning, colourful bouquets, you encourage the production of new flowers. This way, you maintain your Dahlia plants while decorating your home.

Remove faded flowers

As soon as your Dahlia flowers start to fade, remove them at the base with secateurs. This prevents the plant from exhausting itself and encourages it to produce new flowers.

Tip for larger flowers:

If you prefer larger flowers, keep only one flower bud per stem and remove the other lateral buds. Also eliminate small shoots in the leaf axils. The plant will then focus all its energy on developing this single, large flower.
