More information

This tumbling Ted is a small perennial plant with a creeping growth habit that forms a dense carpet of slender, oval, hairy leaves from which a profusion of small, pale to bright pink flowers emerge from the end of spring, literally engulfing its mound of growth. Install this groundcover in rock gardens, on the edges of pathways or on low walls that it will happily climb. It appreciates sun and well-drained soils. Sow thinly and directly in their final positions.

Description

Saponaria ocymoides, also called tumbling Ted, is a small perennial plant with a creeping growth habit that forms a dense carpet of slender, oval, hairy leaves from which a profusion of small, pale to bright pink flowers emerge from the end of spring, literally engulfing its mound of growth. Install this groundcover in rock gardens, on the edges of pathways or on low walls that it will happily climb. It appreciates sun and well-drained soils. Sow thinly and directly in their final positions.

Rock Soapwort or tumbling Ted, is a plant of the family Caryophyllaceae, native to the European Alps that grows on stony hillsides and calcareous rocks in the South of France, in an area that ranges from the Côte-d'Or and the Puy-de-Dôme to Corsica. It is a fully hardy herbaceous perennial that quickly forms a carpet measuring 15 cm in height and 15 cm in diameter. Flowering takes place from May to July, covering its slender foliage with bouquets of small, flat, five-petalled, bright pink flowers, very similar to those of Phlox or Catchflies.

Often used in borders and rock gardens, rock soapwort thrives in these type of habitats. It is therefore advisable not to place it near small, fragile plants or ones that don't develop as vigorously. Combine it with biting stonecrop (Sedum acre) and catchflies whose blooms it will replace, on dry stone walls, in rock gardens and sunny flowerbeds. This plant seems to only want to spread so leave it some space to grow out and alternate with Snow-in-the-summer (Cerastium tomentosum) to obtain pastel blankets at the foot of shrubs or big, sturdy perennials.

Planting and care

Sow directly in the spring or autumn, in a well cultivated soil that has been raked to a fine tilth. In heavy soil, it will be necessary to add in sand or gravel to ensure good drainage. You can mix the seeds with a very fine sand or soil in order to not sow too densely. Do not bury the seeds too deeply and take care to keep the soil moist but not soggy. If necessary, thin out the seedlings as soon as they are large enough to be handled. It will take about 20 days for the young shoots to appear.
