Description

The Fresh Look Red & Yellow Variegated Cockscomb, known by its Latin name Celosia argentea var. plumosa Fresh Look Red & Yellow, is an annual plant native to tropical regions.

Cockscomb stands out with its upright pyramidal cymes inflorescences measuring 10 to 25cm (4 to 10in), composed of small flowers that give the whole plant the appearance of a plume.

Its pale green foliage consists of lanceolate leaves measuring 10-15 cm (4-6in). The entire plant measures about 35 cm (14in).

Cockscomb can be used as a fresh or dried cut flower. Its vibrant colours are ideal for brightening up a dull bouquet.

The flowering period is from July to October without interruption. Planting should take place after the last frost (in May in most regions) as it freezes at 0°C (32°F). The soil should be enriched with compost or potting soil before planting. The preferred exposure for Cockscomb is full sun. The Fresh look Red & Yellow Variegated Cockscomb is used for creating flower beds, borders, or exotic flowering pots on the patio.

Planting and care

Sow Celosia from February to April in a seed tray. Use high-quality compost. Sow your seeds by broadcasting them. Cover the seeds by sprinkling compost on top or vermiculite, gently press down and water generously with a fine sprinkling. Place your seed tray in a well-lit area, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 24°C to 27°C.

The seeds will germinate in 14 to 21 days. Once the plants reach a height of 5 cm (2in), transplant them into pots. 15 days before their final planting, gradually acclimatize them to a temperature of 15°C.

By the end of May or beginning of June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny location. Add a good scoop of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 25 cm (10in) apart.
