Description

Cynoglossum 'Firmament' is a variety of Chinese Forget-me-not that stands out for its prolonged flowering period and its beautiful intense blue colour. It is a hardy annual plant that blooms generously from mid-spring to late summer. Light and delicate, it blends harmoniously in the atmosphere of a romantic and country garden, elegantly associating with other perennial plants, bulbs, or roses to bring a natural touch. Beyond its decorative appeal, Cynoglossum 'Firmament' is a generous source of cut flowers, perfect for creating diverse bouquets. Its ability to self-seed easily, combined with its adaptability to different sunlight and soil conditions, makes it a timeless and almost eternal variety, requiring minimal maintenance to thrive.

Cynoglossum amabile, often called Chinese Forget-me-not, belongs to the borage family, just like borage and forget-me-not. It originates from meadows and mountainous regions, in clear undergrowth and on the edge of forests in eastern China, as well as India, the Himalayas, and Afghanistan. In Latin, the term Cynoglossum means dog's tongue, referring to the lanceolate and rough shape of its leaves. The variety 'Firmament' is a biennial plant, usually grown as an annual. It develops lanceolate and veined foliage rosettes, covered with stiff hairs, a somewhat dull green colour. From May to August, hairy stems emerge, branching in their upper part and reaching at least 50 cm in height. They bear inflorescences in terminal racemes, grouping numerous small flowers with 5 intense blue petals, closely resembling woodland forget-me-nots. The Chinese Forget-me-not self-seeds abundantly in the garden.

The charming and robust Chinese Forget-me-not 'Firmament' is traditionally used to lighten up imposing flowers such as double tulips, peonies, and roses. It is planted in large groups in perennial beds, borders, summer flower beds, and containers, alongside other annual flowers such as love-in-a-mist, cosmos, and poppies... The delicate flowers of the Chinese Forget-me-not add a decorative touch to spring bouquets, combined with irises and lilacs or to enhance large summer flowers such as sunflowers and dahlias.

Planting and care

The seeds of Chinese Forget-Me-Not 'Firmament' are small: approximately 150 to 200 seeds per gram. There are two possible methods for sowing:

Indoor sowing, before transplanting and planting in open ground: Sow from March to May, at a depth of 2 or 3 mm, in fine compost and cover the seeds with a very light sprinkling of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 18-25°C, or wrap it in a polythene bag. Keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. Light promotes germination, which occurs 12 to 18 days after sowing. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual 7 cm diameter pots. Grow them in cooler conditions until the plants are sufficiently developed to be planted outdoors. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimate the plants to outdoor conditions for 7 to 10 days. Plant them in full sun, in moist, well-drained soil, spaced 25 to 35 cm apart. Pinch the tips of the shoots on each stem during transplantation to encourage branching and the production of numerous flowers.

Direct sowing in open ground: Easier to do, sow in May, after the last frost. Sow the seeds spaced apart in prepared soil, covering them with approximately 3 to 5 mm of a light substrate. Germination takes approximately 18 to 25 days. Once the young seedlings reach the stage of 4 to 6 leaves, thin them out to leave one plant every 15 to 25 cm.

It is also possible to grow Chinese Forget-Me-Not as a biennial by sowing it outdoors in August-September and then planting it in place in April of the following year.

Chinese Forget-Me-Not thrives in fertile, well-drained and well-loosened soil, whether in full sun or partial shade. This plant is not demanding and does not require fertilisation or watering. Simply trim the faded stems for aesthetic reasons.
