Description

The Canary Pink Tangier Pea or Lathyrus tingitanus 'Rosea' is a climbing annual plant with a large habit (180 to 200cm (71 to 79in)), easy to grow, with pink to coral red flowers. It displays its superb and abundant, highly fragrant flowers throughout the summer.

With rapid growth, the stems develop tendrils that will naturally cling to the support you have provided when sowing.

Its butterfly-like flowers, 2 to 3cm (1in) long, appear from June to late August, in clusters of 2 to 3 flowers, at the ends of thin and short stems. It is an excellent flower for cutting to make fragrant bouquets.

Native to the Canary Islands and the Iberian Peninsula, this Fragrant climber thrives in warm and sunny locations, as well as well-drained and even rocky soils.

Easy to grow, the large seeds of the Lathyrus tingitanus Rosea are easy to handle and can be easily sown by children. This fragrant climber is perfect for adding colour to a trellis, a fence, or even a pot on the terrace throughout the summer.

Planting and care

Sow Sweet Peas directly in place at the base of a trellis in March-April, in groups of 2 or 3 seeds, at a depth of 2.5cm (1in). Leave a minimum distance of 30cm (12in) between two groups. When the seedlings have reached the stage of the second pair of leaves, cut the tip of each stem to promote branching. Regular but not excessive watering will accelerate its growth. A sunny location and a supply of flowering plant fertiliser, as well as the removal of faded flowers, will promote abundant flowering from June to August. Beware of snails and slugs that love to devour young plants.
