Description

Alocasia 'Stingray' is a highly original form of houseplant, as Alocasias often are. Its cultivar name is "stingray", and it evokes this flat fish with its broad, wavy-edged leaf with a pointed, recurved tip. This gives the plant a fluid appearance, like a stingray gliding through coastal waters. 'Stingray' reaches an impressive size at maturity and stands out from other Alocasias due to its tolerance for morning sun, meaning you can place it near an east or southeast-facing window, provided it receives good light for the rest of the day and no direct afternoon sun. Ensure its substrate remains slightly moist without overwatering.

Alocasia or Elephant's Ear 'Stingray' belongs to the Araceae family, which includes many tropical plants with spectacular foliage. Native to Malaysia and Queensland, it thrives in tropical and subtropical climates and grows naturally in tropical forests, along riverbanks, and in areas with rich, moist soil. This horticultural cultivar is notable for its substantial dimensions: at maturity, it can reach a height of 1.5 to 2 m with a similar spread. The plant exhibits an upright habit and rapid growth. Its leaves have a highly original shape and glossy texture, displaying a bright medium green. Although flowering is rare indoors, this variety may occasionally produce small white spathes with little ornamental value. The botanical species naturally grows in rich, well-drained soil under dense, humid canopy cover. These conditions explain its specific needs: filtered light, high humidity (around 60-70%), and a consistent temperature between 15 and 27°C. Its leaves and stems contain toxic compounds that may cause irritation if ingested.

Bold and unmistakably tropical, Alocasia 'Stingray' is a true gem for houseplant enthusiasts who have the space and conditions to accommodate it (a humidifier or a sufficiently humid room with good light). Its exotic appearance fits perfectly in a tropical-themed setting, where it becomes a centrepiece. It also complements a bohemian decor with natural accents, surrounded by rattan or bamboo elements. Place it on the floor, and if grouping it with other plants, opt for companions with foliage that isn’t overly large or tough—consider pairing it with Anthurium jenmanii 'Gold' or Alocasia 'Frydeck Variegated'.

Maintenance and care

Arrosez lorsque le substrat est sec en surface, sans laisser d’eau stagnante. Une pulvérisation régulière aide à maintenir l’humidité.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers
