Description
Alocasia 'Frydek', poetically known as Elephant's Ear, is an iconic variety that deserves the attention it attracts. It develops deep green, velvety foliage, with an elongated cordate (heart-shaped) form, adorned with a beautiful white veining along the midrib and lateral veins. This creates a lovely contrast, quite distinct from the more intricate foliage of some other varieties. This houseplant thrives in a well-lit room, but without direct sunlight, in a pot with slightly moist but not waterlogged soil.
Alocasia micholitziana 'Frydek' belongs to the Araceae family, which includes many tropical plants with spectacular foliage. This horticultural cultivar stands out for its moderate size: at maturity, it reaches a height and spread of approximately 50 to 70 cm in all directions. The plant has an upright and spreading habit and exhibits slow growth. Its elongated, heart-shaped leaves have a velvety texture and a deep green hue that contrasts with pale veins. Although flowering is rare indoors, this variety occasionally produces small white spathes with little ornamental value. Alocasia micholitziana, from which this cultivar originates, also called Micholitz's Elephant Ear, is endemic to the island of Luzon in the Philippines. There, it grows naturally in rich, well-drained soils under the dense, humid canopy of lowland forests. These conditions explain its specific needs: filtered light, high humidity (around 60-80%), and a constant temperature between 18 and 27°C. Its leaves and stems contain toxic compounds that may cause irritation if ingested.
Native to Southeast Asia, Alocasias are plants of warm, humid tropical climates and partial shade. Though stunning, they can be challenging to accommodate in our homes, where the air is often too dry. Their roots are also sensitive to both excess moisture and drought. The ideal temperature for cultivation is around 20°C.
Alocasia 'Frydek' is a true gem, even if it is no longer so rare today. Its aesthetic qualities remain present and quite unique. Its exotic and luxurious appearance enhances both tropical-themed spaces, where it stands out, and minimalist or modern interiors. Choose a white planter to highlight its white veins. It also fits beautifully into a bohemian decor with natural accents, surrounded by rattan or bamboo elements, alongside other houseplants with similar growing conditions, such as Calathea or Maranta.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
