Description

The Alocasia 'Curly Bambino', poetically known as Elephant's Ear, is a variety of modest size with small, leathery leaves that are beautifully undulated and embossed. They bear the appearance of the well-known Alocasia Polly that flooded the market a few years ago, meaning they are thick and velvety, with a very dark green hue accentuated by white-green veins. With its exotic charm and compact silhouette, this plant easily fits into small spaces such as in a minimalist Scandinavian decor or a jungle-themed setting. To encourage its growth, provide it with bright light but avoid direct sunlight and keep its substrate slightly moist, without overwatering, which you can achieve with a well-drained substrate.

The Alocasia 'Curly Bambino' belongs to the Araceae family which includes many tropical plants with spectacular foliage. This horticultural cultivar stands out due to its modest dimensions: at maturity, it reaches a height and spread of approximately 30 to 45 cm. The plant exhibits an upright habit and slow growth. Its broad, elongated, heart-shaped leaves have a velvety texture and a deep blackish-green colour contrasting with light veins. Although flowering is rare indoors, this variety occasionally produces small white spathes of little ornamental value.
Native to the tropical undergrowth of Borneo, the botanical species naturally grows in rich, well-drained soil under dense, humid cover. These conditions explain its specific needs: filtered light, high humidity (around 60-70%), and a constant temperature between 15 and 27°C. Its leaves and stems contain toxic compounds that can cause irritation if ingested. Alocasias are plants from warm, humid tropical climates and partial shade, found in Southeast Asia. Magnificent, they can sometimes be challenging to acclimate to our interiors, where the air is too dry. Their roots are sensitive to both excess moisture and drought. Their ideal growing temperature is around 20°C and they are hungry plants.

If you can provide the required ambient humidity conditions, the Alocasia 'Curly Bambino' is a lovely plant to adopt. Its small size means it can be placed in a bathroom. With its exotic and refined appearance, this plant blends perfectly with a minimalist style where it becomes a focal point, or in a tropical setting to enrich a green corner. Place it in a light-coloured planter to highlight its veins. It also fits easily into a bohemian decor, surrounded by rattan or bamboo accessories. Pair this plant with other species with similar needs, such as the Calathea ‘Fusion White’ with its subtly variegated foliage, or the Maranta leuconeura, recognisable by its graphic 'peacock eye' patterns.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry on the surface, without leaving stagnant water. A regular misting helps maintain ambient humidity.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, in spring.
Mix universal potting compost, coconut fibre and perlite, with clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 20-20-20 or 10-5-5) every 2 to 4 weeks in spring and summer, diluting to half the recommended dose.

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to maintain their shine and prevent dust buildup.
Remove yellowed, stained, or damaged leaves.

Disease and pest advice

For mealybugs, use a cotton pad soaked in 70° alcohol to remove them manually. In case of red spider mite infestation, mist the young plant regularly to increase humidity.
