Description

The Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret' is sometimes nicknamed 'Metallic Plant' due to the coppery appearance and sheen of its foliage. This variety of Elephant's Ear is an exceptional, sought-afterhouseplant by collectors. Native to the tropical forests of Borneo, this species brings a beautiful touch of exotic sophistication to our interiors.

The Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret' is a perennial with a bushy, upright habit, reaching a height and spread of around 50 cm when grown indoors. Its dimensions may vary depending on growing conditions. Its mature leaves which can measure up to 60 cm in length (including the petiole) feature a dark green upper surface with coppery and metallic reflections, while the underside displays a deep red hue. The prominent veins and three-dimensional texture of the leaves give them a scaly appearance, earning it the nickname 'Dragon Scale Plant'. Their colour evolves over time, shifting from coppery red when they first emerge to green with black reflections.

Indoors, flowering is rare but possible, taking the form of compound inflorescences consisting of a white spadix surrounded by a green spathe.

To thrive, the Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret' requires bright, indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight which could scorch its delicate leaves. It prefers high ambient humidity, around 80% and temperatures between 18 and 25°C. A light, rich, and well-draining substrate is recommended, with regular watering to keep the soil slightly moist, without excess water to prevent root rot.

The Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret' makes a striking addition to modern interiors. It pairs well with other tropical plants that have similar needs. For example, the Calathea 'Crimson' with its vibrant pink foliage, the Philodendron 'Pink Princess' with its green and pink leaves, the Maranta leuconeura with its variegated patterns, and the Ficus elastica 'Burgundy' with its dark, glossy foliage, together create a lush and colourful combination.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately once a week, allowing the surface of the compost to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce the frequency. Overwatering can cause the roots to rot. Mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week to maintain high humidity.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot your Alocasia every year in spring to give it more space and refresh the compost.
Use a mix of universal compost, coconut fibre and perlite, with clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 20-20-20 or 10-5-5) every 2 to 4 weeks in spring and summer, diluting to half the recommended dose.

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to maintain their shine and prevent dust buildup.
Remove any yellowed, stained, or damaged leaves.

Disease and pest advice

For scale insects, use cotton wool soaked in 70° alcohol to remove them manually.
