Alocasia Regal Shields - Elephant's ears plant

Alocasia 'Regal Shields' is a variety of Elephant Ear prized for its large, satiny, deep glaucous green, heart-shaped and broad leaves, adorned with pale green veins and a burgundy underside. The almost black colour of its foliage, along with its stunning rounded and pointed shape, adds a dramatic and tropical element to your interior. This popular cultivar is undemanding and thrives in bright, indirect light and ambient humidity above 60%. It flourishes at temperatures between 18 to 26°C.

Alocasia 'Regal Shields' belongs to the Araceae family, which includes many tropical plants with spectacular foliage. This horticultural cultivar, created in 2007, is a crossbreeding between Alocasia odora and Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet'. At maturity, it can reach a height and spread of approximately 1 m to 1.5 m in all directions. The plant exhibits an upright habit and moderate growth. Its broad and heart-shaped leaves have a satiny texture and a deep blackish-green shade that contrasts with pale veins. Although flowering is rare indoors, this variety occasionally produces small white spathes with little ornamental value. Native to the tropical undergrowth of Borneo, the botanical species Alocasia reginula grows naturally in rich, well-drained soil under dense, humid cover. Alocasia odora, on the other hand, is more commonly found in Southeast Asia. These conditions explain its specific needs: filtered light, high humidity (around 60-70%), and a consistent temperature between 15 and 27°C. Its leaves and stems contain toxic compounds that may cause irritation if ingested.
