Description

Crassula perforata, commonly known as "string of buttons", is a perennial succulent plant native to South Africa. Valued for its sculptural foliage and easy care, it makes an excellent choice to brighten up well-lit indoor spaces.

Belonging to the Crassulaceae family, Crassula perforata is a succulent species that develops creeping or slightly erect stems, reaching up to 45 cm in height. The stems, often branching, bear triangular to ovate, pale green to glaucous leaves, with margins often tinged red or yellow. Measuring between 8 and 20 mm long and 9 to 13 mm wide, they are densely arranged along the stems. Over time, these can become slightly woody at the base. This unique leaf arrangement, appearing to be "pierced" by the stem, is the origin of its specific name "perforata". In its natural habitat, Crassula perforata thrives on rocky, sunny slopes, mainly in the Cape provinces of South Africa, extending to KwaZulu-Natal. It is frequently found in xerophilous scrubland areas, where it grows among rocks and other low vegetation. Flowering typically occurs in spring and summer, in the form of terminal paniculate inflorescences, measuring between 15 and 30 cm long. The small, star-shaped flowers are cream-white to pinkish-white and emit a subtle fragrance. This species is well adapted to arid conditions, storing water in its fleshy leaves to survive drought periods.

Crassula ovata pairs well with other succulent plants such as Echeveria, indoor Sedums or Haworthia. In pots, planters, or open terrariums, you can have fun playing with shapes and colours.

Maintenance and care

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Disease and pest advice
