Description

Discover the Dracaena fragrans 'Janet Craig', also known by the synonym Dracaena deremensis 'Janet Craig'. This cultivar effortlessly brings elegance to your home with its exotic appearance featuring glossy, sword-shaped, dark green leaves. Low-maintenance and resilient, this houseplant (suitable for both homes and office spaces) displays clusters of foliage that start upright before arching gracefully over sturdy trunks, adding structure to your space. With slow growth, it requires minimal care. Perfect for modern interiors or as a specimen in an indoor jungle, it thrives in bright rooms away from direct sunlight but tolerates lower light conditions.

Belonging to the Asparagaceae family, the Dracaena Janet Craig originates from a species with multiple botanical names: Aletris fragrans, Dracaena deremensis, Cordyline fragrans, Pleomele fragrans, Dracaena fragrans. Its common names include Fragrant Dracaena, African Dragon Tree, and Cornstalk Dracaena. Native to tropical Africa, particularly Angola, Mozambique, and surrounding regions, it is often grown outdoors in tropical regions. Widely cultivated as a houseplant worldwide, it proves quite undemanding. It can reach up to 2m in height and 1.5m in width with a slow growth. Its lanceolate foliage can grow up to 1 metre long, elegantly drooping as the plant matures. Flowering is rare indoors, appearing as small white flowers.

Indoors, the Dracaena Janet Craig prefers moderate humidity (60% or higher) but adapts well to standard ambient humidity and drier air. It thrives best between 18–26°C in well-drained soil with moderate watering. Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry before watering again, and avoid letting water stagnate at the bottom of the pot.

The 'Janet Craig' Dragon Tree blends seamlessly in any contemporary, bohemian, minimalist, or exotic style—adding a lush, warm touch to any room. Thanks to its bushy habit, palm-like foliage, and striking stature, it makes a bold architectural statement. Pair it with plants featuring differently shaped leaves such as the Dracaena fragrans 'White Jewel' and the Philodendron 'Minima'.

Maintenance and care

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

No pruning necessary, but remove any yellowed or damaged leaves to encourage new growth.

Disease and pest advice
