Description

The Philodendron verrucosum, or Velvet Philodendron, is a very beautiful indoor climbing plant. Its foliage is lush and its growth is vigorous. Its large heart-shaped, deep green leaves with contrasting veins embody all the exoticism and lushness of South American tropical forests. To ensure successful cultivation, place it in a bright spot without direct sunlight and maintain high ambient humidity. Provide it with a support like a stake to sustain its climbing habit. With attentive care, it will become the centrepiece of your indoor plant collection!

The Philodendron verrucosum, belonging to the Araceae family, is a perennial climbing plant native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, particularly Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Its leaves are large, cordate, and feature a velvety texture. The upper surface is a deep green with light green or even white veins, while the underside may be tinged with brick red. The often purple and covered petioles in white down support these imposing leaves which can reach up to 30 cm in length at maturity. The plant also develops aerial roots, enabling it to cling to supports. Indoors, with a suitable stake, it can reach a height of 1 to 2 m with a spread of around 80 cm. Its growth is considered rapid, especially under optimal humidity and light conditions. Flowering indoors is rare, but in its natural medium, the Philodendron verrucosum produces dark green spathes enclosing a light green or white spadix. Indoors, it is recommended to place it in a spot with bright light but shielded from direct sunlight. The ideal temperature ranges from 20 to 25°C.

Warning - Note that the Philodendron verrucosum is toxic if ingested.

The Philodendron verrucosum will reign in a bright and humid room such as a bathroom with a window or a sunlit living room. With its rather extraordinary velvety foliage, it will become a true centrepiece when placed against a palm trunk or at the base of a moss-covered stake. Pair it with textured ceramic pots or accessories made from natural materials like wood or rattan to enhance its exotic appeal.

Location

Maintenance and care

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Remove damaged leaves regularly to encourage healthy growth.

Disease and pest advice
