Description

Kalanchoe farinacea is a succulent plant with a shrubby habit, featuring foliage dusted with a silvery white hue, luminous and refined. Native to Madagascar, this species is cherished for its round, overlapping leaves and its ease of cultivation in our homes. Hardy and low-maintenance, it will delight enthusiasts of succulent plants.

Kalanchoe farinacea, or Farinose Kalanchoe, belongs to the Crassulaceae family and naturally grows in the dry, rocky areas of Madagascar. This species develops a shrubby and branching habit, reaching 40 to 60 cm in height indoors. Its upright stems bear thick, ovate leaves, covered with a fine whitish waxy layer that helps reduce evaporation and withstand drought. The plant may eventually produce small tubular orange flowers, gathered in discreet yet charming inflorescences. Like many Kalanchoe, it has fleshy tissues capable of storing water, allowing it to endure long periods without watering.

Kalanchoe farinacea requires plenty of light and must receive several hours of sunlight daily to maintain its silvery foliage. This plant tolerates temperatures ranging from 15 to 30 °C but cannot withstand frost and should be kept above 10 °C in winter. Its growing medium must be very well-draining, with a mix of cactus compost, sand, and perlite being ideal. Watering should be moderate, ensuring the soil dries out completely between waterings. In winter, when growth slows, watering should be significantly reduced. While rarely prone to diseases, it can be susceptible to mealybugs.

Kalanchoe farinacea will thrive in a bright living room, conservatory, or sunny office. It pairs easily with other succulent plants featuring contrasting foliage, such as Kalanchoe thyrsiflora 'Bronze Sculpture', Echeverias, or Sedum morganianum, for a striking visual effect. Used alone or in a cactus arrangement, it adds a touch of charm to interior decor.

Maintenance and care

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Disease and pest advice
