Description

Senecio cylindricus is a succulent bush-like young plant, prized for its upright habit and cylindrical blue-green leaves that give it an elegant and architectural appearance. Native to South Africa, this slender, evergreen plant can be grown in pots indoors or outdoors during the warmer months.

Originating from the coastal and arid regions of South Africa, Senecio cylindricus belongs to the Asteraceae family and is often confused with other species of the Curio genus. Initially semi-prostrate, it spreads before gradually becoming more upright over time, forming a compact and spreading bush. Its cylindrical leaves, almost round in cross-section, are smooth and coated with a protective wax layer that helps reduce water loss in arid conditions. It typically reaches 30 to 50 cm indoors, with relatively fast growth under good conditions. Its evergreen, bright blue-green foliage contrasts beautifully with darker-toned succulents. Its flowering occurs mainly in late spring or summer, producing lightly scented, creamy-white tubular flower corymbs. These inflorescences attract pollinators in its natural habitat, though indoor flowering is rarer. It is also favoured for pot cultivation on well-exposed terraces or balconies but cannot tolerate frost.

To cultivate Senecio cylindricus, place it in a spot with bright light, such as a patio, or in direct sunlight. Senecio cylindricus pairs harmoniously with other succulents featuring contrasting shapes and colours, such as Echeveria or Crassula.

Maintenance and care

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

To maintain a compact shape and encourage branching, you can pinch the tips of the stems in spring. The cuttings obtained can be replanted to thicken the plant.

Disease and pest advice
